This species thrives throughout tropical Africa. Relatives of this species thrive in Asia and tropical America.

The wood is light yellow to creamy white and the differentiation between sap and heartwood is negligible.

Koto has good mechanical properties. When it is freshly cut, it has an unpleasant smell which, however, disappears after drying.
